And, yes, he ate the salmon too 🙂

Disclosure: I was given a digital copy of Silvana’s Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Kitchen to review and share a recipe from the book with my readers. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.

Sticky Sesame Salmon Recipe & Nutrition Notes

  • The salmon was so easy, moist, and delicious, and the fact that my son ate it all up makes it a definite addition to our family’s favorite recipes!
  • The recipe calls for 2-4 tablespoons of sugar, but IMO, that would be too much. I used 1 tablespoon and thought it was perfectly sweet. Maple syrup or honey in place of the sugar would also be delicious.
  • I used 1 tablespoon of some chili garlic sauce that I had on hand instead of the 2 tablespoons the recipe calls for, and it had a nice {not too spicy} kick which was perfect for my son. If I were to make it for just myself and Mr. Spicy, I would probablycrank up the heat a little.
  • The beauty of this recipe is that you can cook up a big batch of salmon for dinner and enjoy it with some veggies and rice to soak up the delicious sauce (Purple/Forbidden rice would be delicious), and then save the leftovers for a Salmon Salad the next day. I think Sticky Sesame Salmon with Orange Sauce would be deliciously served on top of my favorite Crunchy Asian Chopped Cabbage Salad with Peanut Dressing. Mmm…Hmmm….!
  • Salmon is one of my favorite MIND Diet friendly and Mediterranean Diet friendly foods. It’s rich in anti-inflammatory healthy omega 3-s, beneficial for brain health, autoimmune disease, heart health, and overall health.

Prep Time: 8 minutes minutes

Cook Time: 12 minutes minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes minutes

Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

For the Sauce

  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup orange juice, preferably fresh squeezed
  • 2-4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons chili paste, such as sambal oelek, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

For the Fish

  • 4 6- ounce salmon fillets, skin removed
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/3 cup sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.

  • Make the sauce: In a large bowl, stir together the ketchup, orange juice, sugar, chili paste and sesame oil. Set aside.

  • Make the fish: Season the salmon generously with salt and pepper, then drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil. Place the seeds on a plate and dredge the tops of the fillets in the sesame seeds to coat.

  • In an ovenproof skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the salmon, sesame seed side down, to the pan and sear, turning once, until golden brown about 3 minutes on each side.

  • Transfer the skillet to the oven and roast the salmon until cooked through, about 6 minutes.

  • Generously brush with the orange sauce and serve.

Notes

For a low FODMAP version, the amount of ketchup per serving falls between low to moderate in FODMAPS, so you can include it, or substitute with tomato paste. Most commercial chili paste contains garlic, so look for one that doesn’t have garlic, or omit it from the ingredient list.

FAQs

Is it better to bake salmon covered or uncovered? ›

Baked salmon is best when cooked at 425°F in the oven.

Even thicker fillets don't take long. We recommend baking the salmon uncovered. Simply rub the fillets with a little oil, sprinkle them with salt and pepper, then place them in the roasting pan skin-side down before popping them in the oven.

Why is my baked salmon not crispy? ›

It's important to leave the filets undisturbed and cook at a high enough temperature for long enough to help develop a crispy skin (~6-7 minutes at medium heat). At this point, the salmon will be cooked about half to three-quarters of the way up the sides (see photo below).

How do you bake salmon without it sticking? ›

If you're baking or roasting fish in the oven, you'll need a baking sheet and either parchment paper or aluminum foil, which make for easier clean-up and help to prevent sticking, says McCue. Before placing the fish on the baking sheet, brush the paper or foil with neutral oil for an instant nonstick surface.

How do you bake salmon so white stuff doesn't come out? ›

How Do You Prevent It?
  1. Pat the fish dry with paper towels before cooking. ...
  2. Attempt to cook evenly sized pieces, even if it means cutting into your filets.
  3. Use a medium temperature instead of a high temperature to cook it. ...
  4. If searing salmon, keep it skin-side down for as long as possible.

Is it better to bake salmon at 350 or 400? ›

What is the best temperature to bake salmon? 400°F (205°C) is ideal as it allows the fish to gain colour and the skin to become crispy. If you prefer a milder method, you can bake it at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes or until done. The salmon baked at 425°F (215°C) produces tender, creamy fillets that cook quickly.

Is salmon better in foil or no foil? ›

Cooking salmon in foil just makes things easier. It creates a buttery, fresh, evenly cooked fish without having to be as precise. Moisture is preserved while flavor is exploded! Your fish won't have any char marks either!

Is it better to bake salmon in a glass or metal pan? ›

While metal is a conductor, glass is an insulator, meaning it heats up slowly, retains the heat well, and cools down slowly. While this property can mean overly intense heat for desserts and other baked goods, it's a great one for fish, which benefits from the even heat of glass.

What not to do when cooking salmon? ›

But before you turn on the heat, don't let these blunders get in the way of your perfect salmon dinner.
  1. Not removing the pin bones. ...
  2. Seasoning the fish too soon before cooking. ...
  3. Removing the salmon skin before cooking (with one exception).

What is the tastiest way to cook salmon? ›

Wrap your salmon in a parchment packet with aromatics, citrus, veggies, and a drizzle of olive oil. The steam trapped in the packet will infuse the fish with flavor and cook it gently, making it tender and juicy. Bonus: The parchment packets only take about 15 minutes at 425°F and the cleanup is minimal.

What happens if you don't rinse salmon before cooking? ›

Does Salmon Need To Be Rinsed? Salmon does not need to be rinsed before cooking, says Dr. Farzad, who points out that, “food safety guidelines suggest that rinsing meat including fish/salmon can increase the risk of spreading pathogenic (disease causing) bacteria around your kitchen.”

How do you not overcook baked salmon? ›

To avoid this problem, try Martha Stewart's tip for slow-roasting salmon at a low temperature. (She shared this technique on Instagram, but she didn't invent it.) The gentler heat cooks the salmon slowly and reduces the chances of overcooking. It also gives you the time to calmly assess when the salmon is done.

How to tell if baked salmon is done? ›

Internal temperature: Use an instant-read meat thermometer; the salmon should register 145°F (63°C) at its thickest part. Flakiness: When gently pressed with a fork, the fish should easily flake apart. Avoid overcooking, as it can dry out the salmon.

How do you keep salmon from drying out in the oven? ›

I bake salmon steaks in the oven for about 20 minutes at 170c but wrap them in non stick foil after seasoning the fish with dill, fish seasoning, sea salt and black pepper. The steaks always come out moist and tender.

Do I have to flip salmon in the oven? ›

So, you want skin that is super crisp and flavorful, just as you would want with chicken. Starting your salmon skin-side down, and cooking it until it is well rendered, lightly browned, and crisp, and then turning the salmon to finish the cooking, will make for a terrific dining experience.

Do you bake salmon face up or down? ›

Most people prefer their salmon without the skin, however you should still leave the skin on your salmon until you've baked it. Always bake salmon with the skin side down as this will help protect the fillet from the heat of the pan and it will help the salmon retain its juices and cook evenly.

How long for salmon at 400 degrees? ›

Individual, 6-ounce portions bake in 12 to 14 minutes at 400 degrees F. The cooking time can be several minutes longer or shorter depending upon the thickness of your particular piece of salmon.
