Classes in the first semester usually begins in August and lasts until the end of December, including exams. The second semester runs from January/February to may-June. During a typical academic year, there are two formal semesters — the fall and spring semesters. The academic year starts in the fall semester and runs from August or September to December, with various breaks such as fall break, Thanksgiving break and winter break.

Summer term normally starts in May or June, a week or two after spring term's conclusion. For schools on the semester system, the traditional academic year consists of two terms (fall semester and spring semester) that generally run from August to May.

Alabama law requires 1,080 instructional hours each school year, which equates to six hours a day for 180 days. The law gives schools some flexibility to make the school day a little longer to shave off a few days. Schools currently operate between 174 and 180 days during the year.

The Semester System

Academic Sessions

Undergraduate students must be registered for 12 or more credits to be considered full-time; students registered for less than 12 credits are considered part-time. In order to graduate in 4 years, students should take an average of 15 credits per semester.
